If you want to see Flamingos, why not make it an adventure! Follow this route from Cancun to Rio Lagartos to find some massive Flamingo colonies.
Using these tracks you'll pass through several towns. Most have an opportunity to stop and look around. Some have some history from when the Spanish were here and have a square and church. There are shops and restaurants in many places, too.
Fuel along the way
These more rural areas often do not provide premium fuel, or not reliably. Plan accordingly and make sure you fuel up before you leave Cancun. Diesel and regular gasoline is commonly available on most towns.
Police checkpoints
Along the way you'll encounter several active police checkpoints. Most notably at the Yucatan border. In general these are just a show of force.
Slow down and stop where indicated and keep your distance from other road users. Give the police time to do their thing.
If you're stopped, act casual and friendly and tell them where which city you're coming from that day and where you're headed to at the moment. Nothing more or less, unless specifically asked. Yes it's a waste of your time.
