Two or three years ago I excitedly started a new project to unify search and re-invent the internet doing it. Grandiose, I know. But that was a thought often on my mind. Provide a better way to search the internet and eventually start my own search engine. Index the internet and have people use it.
I wrote code daily for a few months. Endlessly testing new search engine crawlers I'd create. I really liked working on Goosle, it's also my most starred project on Github, which is kinda interesting. But then the sabotage started. Search engines refusing to be crawled. APIs randomly blocking requests. Awkward restrictions and quotas that simply didn't align with reason. So I kinda stopped doing anything for Goosle and let it linger for a while. Maybe I'd find some inspiration or motivation to try and work around these limitations. But that didn't happen. It's been well over a year and my enthusiasm is completely gone. The energy to do something useful for an uncaring world is also gone.
Througout 2024, at random, Yahoo search would stop working. News sites would stop providing news. Mojeek and Qwant would block my server entirely, sometimes. YouTube changed something so nothing worked for it anymore. So I considered that maybe a search crawler wasn't the way forward and I refocused the entire project on doing Magnet searches. This works slighly less annoying, but it's not what I want Goosle to be, even though it's a very nice way of finding downloadable content. A way where you do not have to worry about VPNs, dumb ads and the virus infections they cause.
The current version is 1.7.1. A pretty much finished version 1.8.something is floating around, according to the changelog. But nothing works in it for some reason - I can't remember why or what happened with it. Probably because I've been working on a major rewrite that would be version 2.0. In it Goosle would refocus on Magnet searches and ditch all other searches. No more Regular, news, video and image search. It's currently at beta 60 on my personal setup and I still sometimes use it.
But damn, I want a better internet. Not just easier torrent searches. I want better and easier search in general! Unfortunately I don't have the energy and skill for it to make it happen.
So, no more Goosle for the time being. Maybe in the future I'll revisit the project, but Meh...
