Yesterday when we left the Sonora desert the horizon to the left was a big blur of rain. So I had a feeling something was up already. I've had this feeling of impending doom for the past week or so and just wanted to make sure the road was OK. Especially since there is a massive floodplain in that area and only one road heading south.
As far as I can tell the road there is fine. Good!
Less good is that 3-4 days south, the one road leading to La Paz is out. Apparently it rained for a few hours, maybe 3 days. Yes, the news sucks. Anyway, apparently a river formed, washing the only paved road away. A gas tanker truck fell in the hole and a whole river delta down in the valley flooded. A little town downstream washed away or something.
That's what some news tells. Some say it's just the road, others have images and videos of everything being flooded. Then the governor announced some roads are closed, and others re-opened. But also his office posts pictures of him walking around on a dry sandy road in a bright sun.
And then other news says the internet and power is out down there. But then, where does the news come from so quickly, since the next town is 100+ kilometers away. So reports and reliable info is a bit sketchy for now.
According to Google and Apple Maps there is a detour further down the slope. A narrow sand road that ends up on a paved road after about a kilometer, then that road continues onto the regular road after a few kilometers.
Sounds good to me... But if it rains again I may get stranded along the way somewhere.
