Visit Merida from Cancun without using toll roads

Visit Merida from Cancun

Tollroads (Quota) can be quite expensive. Especially if they know tourists will use them. So why not save a few bucks, drive on a more scenic road and see something else than trees zip past your windshield.

Using these tracks you'll pass through dozens of towns and smaller cities. Each has an opportunity to stop and look around. Some have a Spanish era city center with a square and church. There are shops and restaurants in many places, too.

Fuel along the way

These more rural areas often do not provide premium fuel, or not reliably. Plan accordingly and make sure you fuel up before you leave Cancun and Merida. Diesel and regular gasoline is commonly available on most towns.

Police checkpoints

Along the way you'll encounter several active police checkpoints. Most notably at the Yucatan border and some in larger towns in Yucatan. In general these are just a show of force.

Slow down and stop where indicated and keep your distance from other road users. Give the police time to do their thing.

If you're stopped, act casual and friendly and tell them where which city you're coming from that day and where you're headed to at the moment. Nothing more or less, unless specifically asked. Yes it's a waste of your time.
