You can always book a tour to visit local attractions, but if you have your own car or motorcycle, you can also head out on your own and make your own adventure.

Uxmal Ruins

The Uxmal Archeological site is an excellent place to visit if you like big pyramids. As the main attraction is, indeed, a huge pyramid. Personally I think this is the most impressive of all the historical sites I visited.

Many smaller larger buildings, housing and squares surround the main pyramid and most are accessible to the public.

Mayapan Ruins

Mayapan is a smaller place to visit, less preserved but supposedly it has the only round building the Mayans ever built.

The main attraction is the round building, believed to be some kind of observatorium, and a medium sized pyramid in the middle which you can climb.

The route follows the carretera through the forests of Yucatan, first to Uxmal followed by Mayapan. We spent a few hours on each archeological site and did both in one day.
