The international goose

Coming in for a landing!

This week we started building the kitchen in the main house. I say we, like me and my mom are doing it, but we hired a contractor and his helper to do a lot of the work.

We already stripped the tiling and all electrical from the main counter top and bar months ago. And for the last few days Mr. Contractor has been busy to put in new tiles. We opted for a light grey tile, with a contrasting backsplash of ceramic green. In an attempt to modernize the whole area we’re adding about 1 square meter of countertop to accommodate the induction cooker, and we’re replacing the sink.

For the electrical system I’ve opted to re-do all of that too with thicker wire. In the old setup there was 1 double outlet, lumped in with the ‘house’. The whole house had like 3 breakers or something.
This new layout will allow several larger appliances to work without issue. I’m also adding in an extra 3 double outlets. This allows for a total of 8 appliances to be hooked up at the same time.

The thicker wiring is of-course so that multiple things can work at the same time too. I figured that standard 20A groups are too limited, so I’m making 2 new groups with a 30A breaker each.

For storage, there is a concrete shelf under the bar. And above the counter top we’re making new shelves. One L shaped longer one in the corner and a shorter one above it. This unevenness should make it an interesting area to look at.

The contractor works very slow for this job, for some reason. Not sure why, didn’t ask. And I don’t really care. They work on a fixed fee. So that’s their loss. But I’m excited to see how it all turns out.
