To the future and beyond!
The internet that should be, is gone! I see no future in it anymore. Not for me anyway. Not with what I'm doing or good at. The rise of AI and the death of online freedom made sure of that. So what's a sensible person to do? Spend most of his savings on something outrageous of-course! That's right I have bought a house in the city of La Paz in Mexico.
And not just one house... On the lot is a 2 bedroom house with a separate appartment on top of it. And behind the house, where you'd normally expect a spatious backyard, is a 4 unit appartment block.
That's right, I'm a real-estate mogul. Booyah!
It's a dump
The house is 70-ish years old. The apartment, which is more like a room with a balcony, is newer. But it's in shambles. It requires a lot of work to bring both to an acceptable living standard.
We keep finding more broken or poorly built things. That's not from poor maintenance either. Poorly welded bits. Crumbling cement. Non-sensical window sizes and doors-And almost nothing closes properly. You name it, and some idiot builder made it real...
In the house a few window frames need replacing. It needs a new airconditioner. The kitchen is bad. The bathrooms also need re-doing, probably new tiles. And I expect to find some silliness with the electrics and water infrastructure, but I didn't really look at that yet.
The upstairs apartment is uninhabitable and needs to be rebuild completely. The ceiling is so low I constantly feel like ducking. The floorspace is tiny too.
The idea with this is to rebuild it and claim half of the empty roof space/balcony for an extra bedroom and bathroom. That should bring the floor space to about 40m2, which is nice for a 1 bedroom apartment.
It's pretty great
The 4 separate appartments are pretty much ready to go. Built less than 10 years ago and mostly finished by the previous owner. A few units have no heater, but do have plumbling for it. One or two air conditioners are missing and some of the tiling is broken or done ugly.
But if you can ignore the meh paintjob, I could live in those today. I'm not going to ignore the paintjob, but you know what I mean. They all need furniture too. A bed and some chairs at the very least.
All 4 apartments have a bedroom, small private area and a kitchen. Of-course each has a bathroom. They all share a paved common area with some plants and they all share the same front-gate. It's pretty neat I think.
The future is bright
I'm going to fix up the house so my mother can live there and finally retire. For myself I'll build a penthouse on top of the house. And once all the apartments are painted, fixed up and furnished, I'll rent those to affluent vacationers, snowbirds from Canada and the USA and other folks that need a place to live for the medium and long term.
I've set my mind on doing a lot of the work myself. We'll get a building crew for the big stuff of-course. I'm not going to bother building walls and roofs and all that. But I can paint walls. I have sort of decided to make some of the furniture myself. Maybe do some basic tiling. And I'm an electrician by trade, so I should be able to do most of the electrics myself too.
To be continued...
